Ice Golem – COC

“The Ice Golem has a chilling personality and absolutely zero sense of humor. He frosts over everything he touches, freezes his surroundings when destroyed, and ices up when talked to at a party. On defense, his freeze effect is smaller and has a shorter duration.”

Ice Golem Clash of Clans Summary Points

  • Ice Golem falls under the category of Dark Elixir Troops.
  • To access the Ice Golem troop, you must have a Dark Barracks level of at least 8 and a Town Hall level of 11.
  • Ice Golems are powerful tanking units with low damage but high hitpoints for the housing space they occupy. Their attacks slow down whatever they attack, reducing affected Defensive Buildings or units’ fire rate by 50% for 2 seconds. Upon death, the Ice Golem freezes everything in a large radius, completely immobilizing any defenses and enemy units caught within. However, the upon-death freeze does not deal any damage.
    • It is worth noting that the death freeze caused by an Ice Golem does not hinder the triggering of Traps. However, it is important to keep in mind that the Trap that is activated will appear frozen.
  • When facing a battle, it’s wise to keep in mind that Ice Golems prioritize attacking defensive structures over anything else. They won’t pay attention to any other enemy buildings or troops until they’ve dealt with the defenses. Even when confronted by Clan Castle troops, heroes, or Skeleton Trap skeletons, they remain focused on their mission. It’s worth noting that Ice Golems don’t consider the Clan Castle to be a defense, even if it’s holding enemy troops. However, they do recognize the defending Grand Warden and any activated Town Hall weapon as defensive buildings, just like any other defense-oriented troops.
  • Once all defenses have been eliminated, Ice Golems will target the closest building to them without any preference for its type. Should enemy units come into range, they will engage in battle but will remain focused on their current target until it is destroyed.

Introducing Ice Golem Clash of Clans

Strategy

Offensive Strategy

  • Ice Golems are very strong tanking units compared to other high-hitpoint units because they have good health for their housing space, have two special abilities (slowing defenses it attacks and freezing everything in a radius of 7.5 tiles when destroyed for a few seconds), and only take up 15 housing space. Their freeze effect stops high-damage defenses from attacking for a while and lets other units destroy important buildings.
    • To ensure maximum effectiveness, it is imperative to deploy troops or Heroes with high DPS during a freeze. Despite its potential, the Ice Golem is not a suitable option for a long-lasting tank, as its HP for the entire base is relatively low.
  • To effectively destroy a compartment, it’s imperative to utilize a Queen Charge with five Healers. In the event that you’re not using this strategy, make sure to freeze the area using an Ice Golem prior to deploying the Archer Queen. This will ensure the efficient execution of the attack.
  • To effectively take down Ice Golems, you must have a powerful army comprised of strong Wizards, Witches, Bowlers, and the Archer Queen to provide additional support. The renowned Ice Golem BoWitch strategy for TH11 involves utilizing Ice Golems as the main defense and executing a relentless attack with Witches and Bowlers.
  • The Ice Golem is the perfect counter for a single-target Inferno Tower, as it freezes it upon death. This effectively resets its damage ramp-up and allows other troops to destroy it easily.
  • You need to make sure to utilize the freeze fully. If there is a large amount of high DPS buildings near the Ice Golem’s target, consider bringing a lesser tank like a Giant to allow it to get to where it needs to freeze. One can also consider placing the Ice Golem in a Siege Machine, such as the Wall Wrecker or Battle Blimp, to get it into the core of a base. This allows the opposing Town Hall Weapon to be frozen, as well as other core defenses, making for an easy path to the center for your other troops.

Defensive

  • Ice Golems MUST be positioned in the center of your defenses, as they are tough units that can absorb a lot of damage. They are similar to Giants, Golems, and Lava Hounds. Their ability to freeze any attackers left standing for a short while makes them invaluable even when outnumbered. Additionally, they can distract enemy troops for a long time.
  • Ice Golems make for an excellent defensive strategy in Clan Castles. Their ability to absorb damage and create a shield for other troops to attack from behind is highly advantageous. Additionally, the resulting freeze effect upon their death can be used to stall attackers, providing more time for Clan Castle troops and defenses to inflict damage on them. It’s essential to keep in mind that the freeze effect is weaker when used for reason, having a smaller area of development and shorter duration compared to when used for attacking. Hence, exercise caution while deploying Ice Golems for protection.
  • It is important to note that a Level 4 or higher Spring Trap has the ability to bounce off the Ice Golem found on the map. To ensure successful usage of Spring Traps against them, strategic positioning is key. Place them in areas where the death freeze won’t compromise important defenses, such as the entrance to an outer compartment.

Upgrade Differences

  • The Ice-Golem undergoes minor visual changes at levels 3, 5, and 7.
    • At level 3, the segments closest to the hands turn a darker blue, and the feet turn an icy blue.
    • At level 5, the upper body segment turns to a darker blue and gets a little bit bigger.
    • At level 7, the face gets an extra piece of ice. There is also a beard made with ice.
